Beijing National Stadium

Situated in Olympic Green Village, Chaoyang District, Beijing National Stadium (Bird Nest) is the main stadium of track and field, football, gavelock, weight throw and discus of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, as well as the place hosted the Opening and Closing ceremonies. Nowadays, it is the center of international and domestic sports competition and recreation activities, as well as a hot tourist attraction.

The design of this large stadium is very special, with the steel structures exposed entirely in the most natural appearance, which looks like a big nest. A bird nest embraces and nurses human beings. This stadium was designed together by Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron and Chinese architect Li Xinggang and the others. The construction started from December 24, 2003 and finished in March, 2008, which cost over 33 million dollars totally.

With an area of over 258,000 sqm, this stadium could accommodate over 200,000 people with 80,000 fixed seats and 11,000 temporary seats. The tallest point of the stadium is 68.5 meters above the ground and the lowest point is 42.8 meters. The saddle-shaped top is covered by waterproof, semi-transparent air bubble film, with which the sunshine could penetrate into the stadium to help the lawns to grow well.

What’s more, The National Stadium is not only the symbol building of the 2008 Olympic Games, but also the good example to show the world’s architectural history and achievements. the designs of everything in the National Stadium are humanistic. With the bowl-like stands zone surrounds the court, the stands can be changed in many ways to meet the different competitions’ needs, besides, the temporary seats, which were set at the top of the scientifically distributed rows of stands, with the fixed seats to help the spectator to enjoy the game without any visual obstruction. With the electro-acoustic public address system, which makes the index of voice definition reaches 0.6, all the audience can hear the broadcast clearly.

Nowadays, besides sightseeing in the National Stadium, tourist can also go skiing here, which boasts the largest ski resort in urban Beijing.
