The Ladders to Heaven

Legend says long long time ago, when the sky and the earth was not so far as today do, they were connected by ladders. Thus, the immortals and deities could go up and down freely, even sometimes the ordinary people with magic power could climb up the ladders to complain to the Lord of Heaven.

At that time, there were two different kinds of ladders to heaven, the mountains and the trees. Besides, it was said that a place named Duguang in the southwest was theĀ  center of both heaven and the earth. Words describes like this: spring dominates the four spring, the soil was fertile enough to grow crops all year round, the delicious fruits was tender as ointment, birds were often heard singing, the phoenixes were seen dancing and various flowers exhibited their beauty freely and grass and trees were evergreen. Meanwhile, there grew a kind of peculiar tree called Lingshou, which could be used to make walking sticks for old people.

In the middle of the paradise on the earth, there grew a extremely tall tree named Jianmu, whose trunk was perfectly straight into the sky. when the sun shone above, it would leave no shadow. Utter a cry there, and you would find the sound disappeared immediately in the sky without any echoes around.

The shape of this tree was also very strange. The tall and thin trunk had no branches but some crooked ones on the top, like the canopy of an umbrella. Meanwhile, as the trunk was shaken, lots of soft barks would fall down then. Seeing from a distance, it looked as if the tree was decorated with silk ribbons floating in the wind.

This tree was the ladder between heaven and the earth. However, few of the people on the earth succeeded in climbing up to heaven. It was said that Fuxi was the first one who succeeded in reaching heaven via this ladder.
