Goddess of Wu Mountain

As the east gate of Chongqing Municipality of China, Mount Wu is the onlu route to visit the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River. With this grand and mysterious mountain, there exists a beautiful and heartbroken story.

Yaoji, one daughter of Emperor Yan, is a beautiful and passionate girl but died before getting married. moved by her innocent and naive, the Great Emperor of Heaven conferred on her soul the Goddess of the Cloud and Rain. In the early morning, she would be a piece of cloud, drifting among the hills and canyons. while at dusk, she would be a spell of drizzle, pouring out her grief and complaint towards the high mountain and flowing water.

Later, Yaoji gradually became a mountain peak, named Goddess Peak of Wu Mountain, and her maids become the peaks of various heights around the Goddess Peak, forming the present twelve peaks of the Wu Mountain. Waves leaping and tide rising or ebbing, the Goddess of Wu Mountain always stands there, telling her stories to the boats coming and going.

Legend says during the Warring States Period, while visiting here, King Huai of Chu State dreamed of Yao Ji confiding her affection to him. after that, he ordered to build a temple here named the Morning Cloud Temple.
