Maitreya

A widely-believed bodhisattva in Chinese culture, it is loved by ordinary people for his benevolence. According to Buddhist sutras, Maitreya was born in ancient India, a contemporary of Sakyamuni. Later become a Buddhist with Sakyamuni.

In folk culture, Maitreya is a person with a full figure, a benign countenance and a smiling face, and he began to deliver all living creatures from torment after being a Buddha after Sakyamuni.

the history of Maitreya in China could be traced back to Western Qin Dynasty, still there are some murals of Maitreya in the Bingling Temple Grottoes in Gansu. As his face and his full figure is so popular in China, gigantic images of him were built in many places in China.
