China has the largest population in the world. Among the population of 1.33 billion, over 40% of them live in urban area. With the aim to limit the population, strict policy of family planning has been in place for decades.


Nationality

China has 56 ethnic groups. The Han people numbers 1.1 billion and makes up 93.3 percent of total population. The other ethnic groups of the minority total 160 million and makes up only 6.7 percent of the country's population. Among the minorities, 15 ethnic groups have population over one million each; 13 over 100000 each; 7 over 50,000 each; 20 fewer than 50,000 each.


Languages

Chinese Putonghua is the generally-used language. However, it differs from place to place, so that dialects come into being, such as Cantonese, Hokkien-Taiwanese, Hakka and so on. Besides, minority languages, such as Mongolian, Tibetan, Uygur, and Korean are also in use.

Taoist, Buddhist, Muslim 1%-2%, Christian 3%-4%
