Facts about China Tourism

Since the beginning of reform and opening up policy, tourism in China has greatly expanded over the last few decades. With the emergence of a newly rich middle class of China and the world, China has become one of the world’s most-watched and hottest outbound tourist markets.

In the world, China is the third most visited country. The number of overseas tourists was 55.98 million in 2010. Foreign exchange income was 41.9 billion U.S. dollars; the world’s fifth largest in 2009. In 2009, China's tourism revenue reached $185 billion. The number of domestic tourist visits totaled 1.61 billion, with a total income of 777.1 billion yuan.

According to the WTO, in 2020, China will become the largest tourist country and the fourth largest for overseas travel. In terms of total outbound travel spending, China is currently ranked fifth and is expected to be the fastest growing in the world from 2006 to 2015.


China's Top Tourist Cities

Beijing, Shanghai, Guilin, Xian and Hong Kong are the five best known tourist destinations in China. Beijing is well-known for its mixture of moderation and ancient culture, such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. Shanghai is the largest and the most prosperous metropolis China, which features a combined culture of East and West. Guilin is famous for the Li River, which is the most beautiful natural scenery of water and mountains. Xi'an, which served as capital for over 1,000 years, is famous for its long history. The Terracotta Army is the symbol of Xi'an.  Hong Kong is a fusion of many cultures and the paradise of shopping.
