Double Ninth Day

The ninth day of the ninth month in Chinese lunar calendar is one of the traditional festivals of China, the Double-Ninth Day. This festival was formally set down as a folk festival in 8th century, and emperors celebrated this day together with civilians according to the custom and etiquette.

As time goes by, the celebrating conventions gradually formed as following. At that day, all the members of a family would get together to spend the festival. Those who are far from the family will generally become more homesick on that day. The whole family will ascend height, collect cornel, drink chrysanthemum wine, appreciate chrysanthemum and eat Double-Ninth cake on that day.

As the Arabian figure 9 stands for longevity and health in Chinese concept, the ninth day of the ninth month in Chinese lunar calendar was set as the Elder's Festival in 1989, and has been enlisted as Intangible Cultural Heritage of China now.
