  • Great Wall Facts

The Great Wall is a series of stone and earthen fortifications stretching more than ten thousand miles from west to east on the boundless area of Northern China. It is seen as a major architectural miracle in the world. The Great Wall was a great defense project in ancient time and it embodied the ancient people of strong will and high intelligence, reflecting China's remarkable achievements of ancient engineering and also showing the long history of the Chinese nation.

It was built initially to prevent the northern borders of the Chinese Empire from intrusions of other nomadic groups. The Great Wall has been rebuilt and preserved since the 5th century B.C. to the 16th century, among which the most famous one is the section constructed between 220–206 B.C. by Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China, however, little of that part remains. The majority of the existing walls we see today was built during the Ming Dynasty.
