Solitary Beauty Peak and Jingjiang Prince City

Jingjiang Prince City Scenic Area, which contains the Solitary Beauty Peak and mansion of the Prince Jingjiang, is a highest grade tourist resource in Guilin. Besides, Solitary Beauty Peak, which is located in the courtyard of the mansion of the Prince Jingjiang, has the authentic work of the inscription "Guilin's Scenery Ranks First in the World", a really typical representation of the culture and history of Guilin.

 

Mansion of Prince Jingjiang

 
It was built by the Zhu Shouqian, a great-grandson of the Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang in Ming Dynasty, when he was given the title of Prince Jingjiang in 1372. It took over 20 years to build his mansion and the history is longer than the Forbidden City in Beijing. In the following 257 years, all together 14 regional princes in 12 generations have lived in the mansion. In 1650, Guilin was conquered by the KongYouDe, a general of Ming Dynasty but surrendered to Qing Dynasty. However, when LiDingGuo, the leader of the Peasant Uprising, conquered the Guilin with his followers, KongYouDe burned this mansion and himself. Later, here was Sun Yat-sen's base camp during his north expedition. At present, it is a part of the campus of Guangxi Normal University.

 

Construction


Around the Mansion, there is a city wall piled up by strong square green stones with four gates, Tiren (Donghua Gate) in the east, Duanli (Zhengyang Gate) in the west, Zunyi (Xihua Gate) in the north and Guangzhi (Hougong Gate) in the south. In the city wall, with an area of 19.78 hectares, splendid and glorious Mansion of Prince Jingjiang consists of Chengyun Gate, Chengyun Hall, Ancestral Temple, the Altar of the Earth and Harvests, Bedchamber, pavilions, terraces and towers etc., and decorated with red walls and yellow tiles. The pinnacled Solitary Beauty Peak stands in a height of 66 meters in the courtyard of this mansion. Yueya (Crescent) Pool, Xuanwu Pavilion, Kwanyin Hall, Sanke Temple and Sanshen (Three Deities) Ancestral Temple are elegantly decorated this peak.

 

Solitary Beauty Peak

This pinnacled hill has been a major scenic site in Guilin since ancient times with a large number of elegant buildings around it and on the top. However, as located in the courtyard of Mansion of Prince of Jingjiang, it has been sealed in hundreds of years. The benefit is the princes of Jingjiang did decorate it with much more splendid ways. Solitary Beauty Peak is also renowned as the 'Sky-Supporting Pillar in the South' from the famous line in Nan Dynasty (420-589) literature, 'none can surpass this solitary peak in beauty'. It was originally called the 'Purple Golden Hill' for when bathed in the dawn sunshine or afterglow, the peaks seems to be wearing a purple gown and a golden belt. The top of this hill is a perfect location to appreciate the magnificent panorama of Guilin city; also the top itself is a nice scenic spot to enjoy the famous Solitary Beauty Pavilion, which is 7 meters high, has 2 floors and is supported by several red pillars.

Among the many wonderful caves in this scenic site, the most famous one is the Dushu (study) Rock, which is located at the east foot of the peak, looks like a stone room with natural windows and beds inside. Another famous scenic spot is the 2.9 meters high Taiping (Peace) Rock covering an area of 140 sqm. It has various stalactites of various shapes hanging down from the roof, along with some Buddha statues and some exquisite characteristics of ' praise of the cave' on the wall.

The Snow Cave, which is located at the northwest foot of the peak, is famous for its snowwhite stalactites.

Yueya(Crescent) Pond, which Is located at the east foot of the peak, is where the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Tower stands nearby. This tower was built in 1921 to memorize the revolution led by Sun Yat-sen, and now this tower has been acknowledged as one of the major protected heritages of Guilin City.

Sanyuan Jidi Hall

"Sanyuanjidi”  manes won the first in the imperial examinations at all the three levels.
Sanyuan Jidi Hall, which is located near the main gate of the Prince City, Zhengyang Gate, was built for memorizing Chen Jichang, who won the first in the three levels imperial examinations.

His success has brought a great glory to his hometown, and then in order to memorize him, people in Guilin built a memorial gate way on the Zhengyang Gate.

Zhuangyuan Jidi Hall

"Zhuangyuan" is the title for people who won the first in the highest imperial examination in ancient China. Zhuangyuan Jidi Hall, which is located on Donghua Gate, was built for Chang Qirui who won the No. 1 in 1841.

Bangyan Jidi Hall

"Bangyan”, is the title for people who won the second in the highest imperial examination in ancient China. Bangyan Jidi Hall, which is located on Xihua Gate, was built for Yu Jianzhang who won this title in Qing Dynasty.

The simulated examination halls of the provincial imperial examination center in Qing Dynasty are nice places to experience the ancient exams with brush pens and answer the test papers. If luckily you become one of the successful candidates, you will be put on the glorious clothes. Have fun.
