Qingyan Ancient Town

Qingyan Ancient Town, one of the most famous ancient cultural towns in Guizhou Province, lies in the southern suburb of Guiyang. Occupying an area of 741 acres, Qingyan Town was initially constructed in 1378. Now, it has become a famous tourist attraction for lots of domestic and foreign visitors.

Qingyan town was built for military reasons,this can be traced back to the beginning of the Ming Dynasty (1368--1644), because of its geographical location. Although it is small in size, Qingyan Ancient Town has an influential local culture, hundreds of sites of relics and a well-planned architectural style.

According to the local geology, the town was established fully of stone. Tourists can see sublime city walls stand right on the cliffs with vast rocks, dividing Qingyan into inner and outer towns. There are four doors in the wall facing four sides: north, south, east and west. There were originally eight stone tablets outside the four gates, which were seen as symbols of Qingyan Ancient Town.

While touring in Qingyan Ancient Town, you will hear many folktales of historical figures that were born or lived here. The first Zhuang Yuan (winner of the national examination) of Guizhou Province during the Qing Dynasty was Mr. Zhao Yijiong who was born and brought up in Qingyan Town. Mr. Chang Pinggang, the General Secretary of Dr. Sun Yat-sen was a county fellow of Qingyan Town.

Wandering inside the inner town, you will certainly be marvelled at the ancient architecture. There are over 30 types including temples, cabinets, caves, monasteries, courtyards and palaces. All of which were refinedly framed by the experienced architects of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. A number of elegant works, such as the stone sculptures of wooden sculptures of Shoufo Temple and Ciyun Temple are all worth a visit. If you like, stop at one of those tea houses and have a taste of the famous local snacks, such as Qingyan tofu, rice tofu and rose sugar, moreover, you can tour on the ancient business streets to admire the elegant classical wooden houses.

Religious culture here is also quite rich, including Buddhism, Catholicism, Taoism and Christianity. If you are a Buddhist, you can take this chance to worship the featured Buddhism culture here. Also, you will be deeply impressed by patter of the Taoists. What's more, you will be surprised to find that so many residents here are Catholic and Christian in that the Catholicism was drawn into since 1851 by a French churchman and the Christianity was introduced to Qingyan Town, nearly 70 years ago.

Qingyan Ancient Town is really a fantastic place for visitors to learn about Chinese ancient culture. If time permitting, it is worthwhile to stay in the town for one or two days. By doing so, you can have a better understanding of the classical elegance of this unique ancient town.
