Over 6,000 animals of over 500 species are on show. The present place of Beijing Zoo was originally the imperial garden in the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). Various plants and trees were cultivated and animals were raised here in the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911). After the establishing of the People's Republic of China, the site was renovated and was later well known as the West Suburban Park.
