Located in the southwest part of Kunming City, Dianchi Lake Scenic Area is the centre of the resort, filling with numerous attractions along the lake, such as Yunnan Ethnic Villages, Daguan Park, Baiyukou Park, Haigeng Bank, Kwan-yin Hill, Xishan Forest Park, temples and pagodas etc. Moreover, the nearby big or small lakeside villages offer visitors an opportunity to experience customs of the local people.
Dianchi Lake
With an area of about 300 square kilometers, Dianchi Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan Province and the sixth largest one in China. It also enjoys a high reputation as 'A Pearl on the Plateau' for its picturesque scenery and its location on the Yungui Plateau. Unfortunately, the lake has been badly polluted. Although efforts have been made continuously to save this lake, they have been largely unsuccessful.
This crescent-shaped lake is about 39 kilometers long and 13 kilometers wide. Besides, it is surrounded by four hills, and over 20 rivers nurture this lake which has a shoreline of 163.2 kilometers. Visitors may appreciate the beauty of the lake and hills from a boat, and explore this cradle of Yunnan culture.
Yunnan Ethnic Villages
This area has over 25 ethnic nationalities with their respective villages, where you can enjoy their their unique folkways and beautiful clothes, as well as the social customs. Besides, you can enjoy the water screen movie and an elephant performance there. Local dishes and pretty handicrafts are worth trying.
Baiyukou Park
Baiyukou Park is located on the west bank of Dianchi Lake. Beautiful gardens are hidden among green trees. In spring, the cherry trees are in blossom, adding luster to this serene place. Here a small hill looks like a white fish opening its mouth to Dianchi Lake. From here, visitors can see white sails of boats on the glistening lake and gulls skimming over the waves.
Daguan Park
Daguan Park is rich in rock gardens, pavilions, bridges and murmuring water, also famous for the longest couplets in China on the Daguan Pavilion which was built in the year 1828. The couplet written in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), contains 180 characters brimming with literary grace.
Kwan-yin Hill
Bordered by the vast lake, Kwan-yin Hill has an altitude of 2,040 meters. A Kwan-yin Temple complex was built here in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), consisting of Kwan-yin Temple, a seven-tier brick pagoda, houses, and a gate to the Kwan-yin Temple.
Haigeng Bank
The bank is a watershed of the Dianchi Lake actually. The length of the Haigeng Bank is about 4 kilometers; however, the width ranges from 40 meters to 300 meters. Slender willow twigs sweep the lake in the gentle breeze along this floating jade belt. In the south is a wonderful natural swimming pool which is always crammed with people in midsummer.
