Features of Chenyang Wind and Rain Bridge

 

It is well known both in China and abroad that Guangxi region has several different ethinic minorities, including the Miao, Zhuang, Dong and Yao etc., while the dominant locals in Sanjiang county is the Dong people. This kind of people is a group of  genius in building splendid and grand buildings, such as the Chenyang Wind and Rain Bridge which was built in 1916. These kind of bridgesare covered with porches and pavilions which provide shelter even when it rains, 'Wind and Rain' bridges.

Also known as Yongji Bridge or Panlong Bridge, Chenyang Wind and Rain Bridge spans the Linxi River of Sanjiang County. this brige is 64.4 meters (73.43 yards) long, 3.4 metes (3.72 yards) wide and 10.6 meters (34.78 feet) high, constructed with wood and stones. The surface of the bridge is paved with wooden boards and both sides are inlayed with railings.On the bridge itself, there are five tower-like kiosks with 'horns' and eaves which resemble the flapping wings of birds.

One most distinguishing features is this bridge has not even one nail or rivet, but many dove-tailed pieves of wood. Maybe you thought it was not so sturdy. However, it has stood here for several decades and still ready for another several decades. This rainbow-like bridge is really a miracle of Dong people.

While touring in this miracle, you could rest yourself on the bench and appreciate the nearby picturesque scenery, the Linxi River meandering from the horizon; tea trees growing on the hills; local peasants working hard in the fields; and waterwheels turning, sending water cascading down the river, Life is just so beautiful and peaceful, isn't it?

Sicne if you want go deeper of the Dong people and their culture and life stely, there are eight famous stockade villages here that offer a peek into the Dong's life and customs,Ma'an, Pingzhai, Yanzhai, Chengyang-Dazhai, Pingpu, Pingtan, Jichang and Guandong.

Accommodation: Near the bridge, there are several hostels. We highly suggest you take the Drum Tower Folk Hostel built on the hill, it will give you a splendid view of the charming scenery.

2.Getting there: Take the 'Sanjiang to Chengyang' bus and get off at the Chengyang.

Visitors could watch the Dong people's performances in front of the Drum Tower of Ma,an. Please notice, if you want to take photos with them, it's not free. Also it is true you have to pay the small entry fee, if you want to enter the new Drum Towers in Pingpu.
