With an area of 2.3 hectares, this 420.5 meters tall, 88 stories building was completed in 1999 by architect Adrian D. Smith. This skyscraper combines the elements of traditional Chinese culture with the newest architectural styles of the time, which makes Jin Mao Tower one of the best constructed buildings in China. This building includes the deluxe 5-star hotel - the Grand Hyatt Shanghai, modern offices, exhibition halls, banquet halls, an observation deck and entertainment facilities etc. The 1st to 2nd floors are the imposing and bright lobby of the business area; the 3rd to 50th floors are occupied by the office spaces; the 51st and 52nd floors are the mechanical and electrical facilities center, restricted only for the tower’s working staff; the 53rd to 87th floors are the places where the deluxe 5-star hotel - the Grand Hyatt Shanghai located; the 86th with a club only opens to the hotel guests; the 87th floor locates the hotel restaurant; and the 88th floor, the highest floor, is the tower’s observation deck, which can hold 1,000 people at one time. Moreover, this tower also has the best elevators.

Two direct elevators run at the speed of 9.1 meters per second that means from the ground to the top only needs 45 seconds. There are also five to six elevators every 10 floors, which reduce the waiting time to 35 seconds even during the rush hours.

The tower has an annex 6-storey high building, which houses the conference rooms, grand banquet halls, multi-function halls, the exhibition halls and a recreational center.

The 3 stories deep basement of the tower, which is equipped with 360 degree surveillance cameras, can hold 800 cars and 2,000 bicycles at one time.
