Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, which is located to the east of Tiananmen Square, north of the Monument to the People's Heroes, is the resting place of first chairman of the People’s Republic of China, Mao Zedong. It covers an area of 57, 2000 sqm, 220m from east to west and 280m from south to north. Above the main gate of the mausoleum, a white marble plaque with golden words: "Chairman Mao Memorial Hall" was beset. Forty-four granite posts stand on the large burgundy granite base, holding the golden glazed double-eaved roof. It was built from November 1976 to September 1977.

 

  • The Court

 
In front of the south gate and north gate there stand four teams, 62 clay figures, each measuring 3.5 m. such as the two groups of clay figures in front of the south gate displaying China Revolution of New Democracy period and socialist construction period. Furthermore, outside the south gate, there fly 30 red flags, representing the 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.

 

  • Memorial Halls

 
There are two floors in the Memorial Hall. In the first floor are the North Great Hall, the Memorial Hall and the South Great Hall.

North Great Hall, which has a 3.45 tall marble statue of Mao Zedong, is the place for commemorative rites and the entrance to the Memorial Hall, and the backdrop of the hall is a 23.74 m wide and 6.6 m tall, floss-embroidered mural painting "The vast homeland".

The Memorial Hall is the place to pay tribute to Chairman Mao. In the Sun Yat Sen's uniform, the body of Mao Zedong was covered with the party flag of Communist Party of China, resting in the crystal coffin. The black granite base of the crystal coffin was inlaid on the four sides with the party emblem, national emblem, army emblem as well as the birthday of Mao Zedong and the day he passed away. The South Great Hall, which has a gilded scripture "Manjianghong" on the north wall, is the exit of the Memorial Hall.


Halls on the second floor are the memorial rooms for the revolutionary achievements of Mao Zendong, Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Deng Xiaoping and Chen Yun with six marble statues and a flock of materials such as photos and literatures etc.

 

  • Tips of Visiting the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall

 

(1) Valid certificates is a must;
(2) Wear neat, delicate clothes and take off hat to pay respect; those wear vests and slippers will not be admitted;
(3) Bags, drinks and cameras are forbidden to take into, please deposit them in the left luggage office;
(4) There will be more visitors on Sep. 9 (the day Chairman Mao passed away), Dec. 26 (the birthday of Chairman Mao), Qingming Festival, Oct. Golden Week Holiday, so if you could, please avoid visiting during these days;
(5) The Memorial rooms for the revolutionary achievements of the six leaders, which are free to the public from 08:30 to 12:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, only accept group visit.
